Design decisions
Custom website or template: which fits your business?

THE SHORT ANSWER
A template can suit a straightforward site when its layout and editing tools fit your needs. Custom design is worth considering when your content, brand or customer journey needs a different structure. Neither choice automatically produces a faster site, stronger SEO or more sales.
Start with your content, not a demo
A template demonstration is designed around selected images and short copy. Try it with your real service names, longer descriptions and photographs before committing. Check the phone layout, too. If you are repeatedly forcing content into the available spaces, the design may be the wrong fit.
A custom approach lets the structure follow the content. That can be useful for a portfolio, multiple service lines or an experience where visual storytelling matters. It still needs clear information and an obvious next step.

Compare the practical trade-offs
| Consideration | Template | Custom design |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | An existing layout to adapt. | A layout developed around the agreed brief. |
| Content fit | Check your real content in the available components. | Define the pages and components your content needs. |
| Editing | Confirm what the included editor allows. | Agree on editing tools or a maintenance arrangement. |
| Budget | Include setup, content, licences and recurring costs. | Include scope, revisions, hosting and future changes. |

Design and technology are separate decisions
A custom design can use a content-management system; a template can be delivered as static pages. Ask how you will publish articles, change prices or add photographs. If you want to edit every week, make that part of the brief rather than assuming a dashboard is included.
Also ask what happens if you change providers. Confirm access to your domain, hosting and agreed deliverables. The right arrangement is one you understand and can maintain.

Keep search visibility grounded in the content
Google recommends helpful content made for people. Its guidance for AI Overviews and AI Mode says established SEO practices still apply, with no special AI markup required. A template or custom label is not a substitute for clear, useful pages.
See Google’s guidance on helpful content and AI search features. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. Whichever route you choose, make service details readable, connect relevant pages and give customers a reason to contact you.
At AI Web Motion, we offer custom art direction, motion and responsive development within defined collections. If your needs fall outside them, discuss the scope before choosing a package.
